Terrel
Howell has worked in the logging business for over thirty years; over
those years he has learned about what is quality wood and what is not,
he has also implemented systems and techniques that has earned him the
respect of his fellow loggers. He even got involved in the cattle
business by raising cracker cows and roping steers. In all his works he
has always had a desire to build a log home.
In the summer of
1994 Terrel came across a stand of pine timber that seemed to be what
he was looking for, 150 year old pine trees, he told his wife Dixie and
they started to fulfill a lifelong dream. He had one of his two full
time crews cut the trees brought to his yard. He hired a local man to
mill his logs. After having the logs milled to the appropriate size. He
stacked all the logs and started making plans to build..
In the
spring of 1995 Terrel started construction. He used the lumber from
those big pines for everything from flooring to doors, cabinets and
ceiling boards. The floors where made from solid heart pine, doors from
pine planks, cabinets from heart pine, Terrel even had the hardware
forged by a local blacksmith. He wanted a true Cracker style log home.
In the summer of 1995 the house was started and completed in the spring
of 1996.
When the house was finished it was beyond what any one
expected. Log Home Design ideas featured it in there August-September
1997 issue. Terrel thought maybe other people would like a home like
this.
In 2002 Terrel decided to start Cracker Sawmill offering
logs lumber and specialty flooring and beams.
In
the fall of 2003 Terrel started planning to build a log home model on a
piece of property that he had purchased in Levy County. He was thinking
of a classic Cracker style log building and decided on the Dog-trot.
The project was started in the spring of 2004, and
completed in the late summer of 2004.
Today
Cracker Style Log Homes is located 2 miles south of Williston, Fl on
Hwy 27. We offer not only logs, but also lumber and flooring to the
public.
Terrel decided that the same desire and commitment that
got him to this point was going to be the same desire and commitment in
selling this product to the public and to help fulfill the dreams of
log home enthusiasts all over just as his dreams were fulfilled.
After
completing the model in late 2004, the business took off. Mr. Howell
then decided it was time to build a state of the art milling facility.
He also wanted to offer Kiln Dry logs and lumber. He even started
drying CY logs for his homes to reduce the chance of shrinking.
With the new milling facility in place Mr. Howell now
offers custom sawing, drying, and milling.
In
2007 Mr. Howell moved his son Dusty from the logging company to the
mill to learn and run his milling facility so he could better serve his
customers.
In the first part of 2007 Mr. Howell had another
thought. He is the only log home company he has found that offers 3
kinds of wood and he has noticed that this was confusing to a lot of
people. So he decided to build a large show room log home that he could
show all of his products to customers. This way they can come see what
looks best to them and know what to expect when they buy a package from
Cracker Style. He decided that the best place would be beside his
milling facility. This way, he could go a step further and give his
customers a tour of his mill. By the end of 2007 it was almost
completed. The showroom project should be completed by the end of
February 2008.
He would like to invite you to stop by and see all the
products he has to offer.
So call or stop in and see our model and find out what
old world ethics, craftsmanship and design are all about.
We look forward to meeting you.
